About This Site

LearnHowToMeditate.org exists to answer one question well: how do I actually do this? Meditation advice online tends to be either vague (“just be present”) or trying to sell you something. We wanted a place that’s neither — clear instructions, honest answers, no paywall, no ads, no fourteen-day free trial.

Who runs this site

This site is a project of The Tranquil Mind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that teaches meditation and offers free one-on-one guidance sessions. It was founded by Nathaniel T. Heidler, a meditation teacher with over ten years of practice in the lineage of Bhante Vimalaramsi and the author of The Tranquil Mind, a practical guide to loving-kindness meditation.

Our editorial stance

We should be upfront: we teach one method here — loving-kindness meditation, drawn from the Buddha’s earliest recorded teachings. Every how-to on this site uses it. We teach it because it works for beginners in a way we’ve never seen matched: the meditation object is a feeling of warmth, and an anchor that feels good is one the mind gladly returns to.

Meditation is bigger than any one approach, and we don’t pretend otherwise. Other traditions — breath practices, Zen, vipassana, mantra — are real paths with real teachers, and where we describe them, we do our best to be fair, the way their own teachers would recognize. We just don’t teach them; we teach ours, and we’d rather be honest about that than perform a neutrality we don’t practice.

What we will never do

  • Claim meditation cures or treats any medical or mental-health condition. It doesn’t, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. (Many people report less stress, better sleep, and calmer reactions — that’s the honest version.)
  • Disparage other traditions or teachers. There are many good doors into this practice.
  • Charge you. The articles are free, and the one-on-one guidance offered through our nonprofit is free too — donation-supported, never required.
