Learn With a Teacher (Free)

You can learn a lot about meditation from articles. But at some point, most people hit a question the articles don’t answer — is it supposed to feel like this? Am I doing it wrong? Why do I keep falling asleep? — and that’s exactly when a teacher helps most. Not a guru. Just a patient, experienced person who has sat through the same wobbles and can look at your specific situation.

Free one-on-one guidance, from a nonprofit

This site is run by The Tranquil Mind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose whole mission is teaching meditation. The guides there offer free one-on-one sessions over Zoom — you talk with a real teacher, they listen to where you are, and they give you guidance matched to you. There is no charge and no catch. The nonprofit runs on donations, and donating is never a condition of being taught.

What to expect in a session

  • It’s a conversation, not a performance. You don’t need any experience. “I’ve never meditated and I don’t know where to start” is a perfectly good opening line.
  • You’ll practice together. Most sessions include some actual guided meditation, so you leave having done it, not just talked about it.
  • You’ll get a next step. A clear, small practice to work with until you meet again — if you want to meet again. No obligation either way.

One honest note: the teachers there teach in a specific tradition — loving-kindness (metta) meditation, drawn from the Buddha’s earliest teachings. It’s gentle, it’s beginner-friendly, and it should feel good. If you’re looking for a different style — Zen, secular mindfulness apps, vipassana retreats — our resources page points to good starting places for those too.
